چکیده

Exposure of Mytilus edulis L. (Molluscs: Bivalvia) to 8 ppb (ppb = 1-lg I ' ) added copper during the vellger larval or post-larval (spat) stages has no significant effects on survivorship or shell growth However, previous exposure to 8 ppb added copper d u r ~ n g the embryo stage significantly Increases veliger growth rate and decreases spat survivorship in a population from the Menal S t r a~ t , Wales, UK, in which this level of copper causes a slgnlflcant increase in embryo abnormality No such effects of pre-exposure are seen in a population from the Westerschelde, The Netherlands, where 8 ppb added copper does not constitute a stress on the embryo. These 'pre-incubation' (embryo exposure) effects far outweigh any direct influence of 8 ppb copper exposure dunng the later stages and have a substantial effect on estimates of the toxlcity of copper over the llfe cycle of M e d u l ~ s K E Y WORDS: Mussels Larvae Copper . Effect of ocean acidification on the early life stages of the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis)

Several experiments have shown a decrease of growth and calcification of organisms at decreased pH levels but relatively few studies have focused on early life stages which are believed to be more sensitive to environmental disturbances such as hypercapnia. Here, we present experimental data demonstrating that the growth of planktonic mussel 5 (Mytilus edulis) larvae is significantly affected b...

NMR Profiling of Metabolites in Larval and Juvenile Blue Mussels (Mytilus edulis) under Ambient and Low Salinity Conditions

Blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) are ecologically and economically important marine invertebrates whose populations are at risk from climate change-associated variation in their environment, such as decreased coastal salinity. Blue mussels are osmoconfomers and use components of the metabolome (free amino acids) to help maintain osmotic balance and cellular function during low salinity exposure. H...

Effects of temperature on scope for growth and accumulation of Cd, Co, Cu and Pb by the marine bivalve Mytilus edulis.

In many aquatic organisms including Mytilus edulis, the role of temperature on bioaccumulation of metals is still not clearly understood. In this study, uptake and accumulation of Cu, Co, Cd and Pb in mussels were investigated at different temperatures (6-26 degrees C). Results from exposure of isolated gills showed a positive relationship between temperature and metal uptake. But in whole orga...

Endocrine Disruption, Reproductive Cycle and Pollutants in Blue Mussel Mytilus edulis

Adult Mytilus edulis were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of 17β-estradiol in seawater for 10 days. Exposure was performed to assess effects on vitellogenin mRNA expression during early gametogenesis stages. The results show an increase in VTG expression, in contrast with previous experiments where no statistically significant change in the expression of VTG in ripe mussels w...
